What is it, you ask? I'm glad you did! It's a benefit to allow the seniors at Carson High School a graduation of fun and revelry that lasts through the night and into the next day. All paid for. It includes a closed door party, and a full day at an amusement park in Northern California, and all transportation.
Since its inception, there hasn't been a single alcohol-related graduation night fatality of a senior. (I don't think there has been one of any other students either, but I can't be sure.) I call that a win, and something I can definitely support. If you want to support it and are local enough, come out and run or walk or strap your cat on a leash and drag Fluffy for 3.1 miles. When you do, don't forget to say "Hi!" to me at the finish line as you're gasping for breath on your 4 min/mile pace while crossing the line. When is it, you ask? I'm glad you did! The event is occurring on Saturday April 14, 2012. Come join us at the corner of 3rd and Curry Street in Carson City.
If you're interested in the technical aspect of the timing itself, I use the PocketTimer Pro app for the iPhone. This will be the 4th or 5th time I've used it to time a race, and I must say it's darn handy. I especially like the fact you can either email or FTP the results at any time directly from the phone. For longer races, it's really nice to be able to post the data while the race is still occurring. Pretty fancy stuff for an inexpensive app.
If you aren't local enough to participate in the race itself, I'm sure the organizers would love to see a monetary donation almost as much as your smiling mug at the starting line. Drop a line as to how you can do it.
